All About That Bling: Roman Jewelry

Class Description:
This class will look at Roman Jewelry during the Roman Empire (primarily the 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE). The focus will be on the different styles, materials used, definitions, cross-cultural differences and origins, and the culture of jewelry in Rome.

The Roman Look & How To Get It

Class Description:
This is a two part class that will focus first on basic female Roman garb (we will be going over how to make the gap-sleeved tunica – one of the simplest pieces to make). The second will address how to up your style to a more period look through the use of accessories, cosmetics, and simple hair styles. There will also be a focus on inexpensive and modern alternatives. This class is designed for those starting out, those new to Roman garb or a Roman persona, those needing an easy solution for garb (or warm weather garb), and those who have little skill, experience, and/or funds. The essence of the class is to provide multiple ways to get the Roman look by using what is available, feasible, and accessible.

How to Make the Roman Gap-Sleeved Tunic

Class Description:
The gap-sleeved tunica (tunica muliebris or woman’s tunic), a descendent of the greek ionic chiton, remains an iconic garment of the Roman Era and a fairly simple garment to construct. This class will go over how to construct this simple garment.

Running an Instagram Account

Class Description:
This class will focus on how to maintain an Instagram account. This will include getting started, reaching and knowing your audience, disseminating information, adhering to copyright laws, where to find and cite content, how to have multiple admins without conflict, scheduling posts via Facebook, collecting and using analytics, content creation, hashtags, linking to other platforms, do’s & don’ts, being the face of your group, attention grabbing content, providing content for newcomers and people who are interested in the SCA, how to make Instagram more accessible (i.e. alt text), and various other tools and apps that are available. Even if you are new to Instagram you’ll probably find something that is applicable to either an official account or a personal one.

You’ve decided to join the SCA, now what?

Have you asked yourself if you need a special name and/or persona? What am I going to wear? What am I going to do? Can I talk to anyone? This is a class/discussion for those new (or newish) to the SCA. The focus will be on how to navigate your way through your first year or two (as many kingdoms are different, this will be somewhat general). Suggestions on how to find information, get or make outfits (i.e. garb), your first events, getting involved, getting over hurdles, and what all those dang shiny hats are about and what to do when you see them.
